labelnews_text[0] = "Paavo Järvi's outstanding reputation makes him one of the most sought-after conductors on the international stage. Born in Tallinn, Estonia, he studied percussion and conducting at the Tallinn School of Music before moving to the USA in 1980, where he continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music and at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute with Leonard Bernstein.
In September 2001 Paavo Järvi was appointed Music Director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, a contract recently extended until 2008/09. During his period as Music Director the Orchestra has toured America (including Carnegie Hall), Europe and Japan. From the 2006/7 season Paavo Järvi becomes Music Director of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra; he is also Artistic Director of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and Artistic Advisor to the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. Previous posts include Principal Guest Conductor with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
Paavo Järvi is in great demand as a guest conductor and appears regularly worldwide with major orchestras. Highlights this season include his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra, a concert for the Saint-Denis Festival with the Orchestre National de France, a tour of Germany with the Staatskapelle Dresden and a tour of Japan with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, which will include a Beethoven Symphony cycle. Working with young people is important to him and in summer 2004 he conducted the European Union Youth Orchestra in a tour of the Baltic States to mark the countries’ accession to the European Union.
A champion of Estonian music, Paavo Järvi frequently schedules works by Arvo Pät, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Lepo Sumera and Eduard Tubin. His extensive recorded catalogue on Virgin Classics includes Pärt’s three symphonies, together with works by Sibelius (his recording of Sibelius Cantatas with the Estonian National Chamber Choir won a Grammy for best choral performance in 2004), Bernstein and Prokofiev. A new recording of Grieg’s Symphonic Dances with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra follows a highly successful Peer Gynt.
