Corinne's 'Love EP' Track-by-Track

Corinne recently sat down with CBR.net to talk through each of the tracks on her new 'Love EP' (out 14th February). Here's what she had to say:

‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’

CBR: "I met Prince in London at his gigs at the O2 and he gave me loads of encouragement. I was amazed by the gig but even more impressed by the aftershow he did in a small venue where he tore up on the guitar and played other people's songs too. This is one of my favourite Prince songs and gives me the chance to sing the kind of sexy, rhythmical music I love but never seem to write. Getting the chance to do this song was a dream".

‘Low Red Moon’

CBR: "Belly were one of the prime influences on my first band Helen, where we had a real indie/DIY ethic. I was addicted to their album 'Star' as a teenager and learnt loads about guitar playing just listening to them. They made me realise the most important thing in music was to express yourself and get your ideas across, without worrying about playing like a virtuoso. We had such fun playing this song, it’s like an aggressive 60's science-fiction soundtrack."

'Is This Love?'

CBR: "My mum was the Bob Marley fan in our house which I loved, because although my father is Caribbean, he didn't much care for reggae. Little examples like this meant I grew up learning that you could be yourself and never had to be a cliché because of your ethnicity. And Bob Marley is such an incredible songwriter, which means you can approach his songs in so many ways. I wanted to put ‘Is This Love?’ into 6/8 and bring the tempo back to underline the poignancy of the lyric, and then Steve Brown arranged the piano part into something reminiscent of Carole King or Aretha Franklin's gospel-soul piano style, which gave it a whole extra level. When guitarist John McCallum added in this Hendrix/Curtis Mayfield sound, it brought in a whole American doo-wop dimension too. So it’s like a whole bunch of my favourite influences in one beautiful song."

‘My Love’

CBR: "I first heard 'My Love' at an event for Paul McCartney at the White House, where I was invited to play. A string section played the song and I was struck by the fragility of that ascending melody on “My love does it good”. I was also really touched by Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney's relationship; their mutual respect and the fact they had known each other so long. When we recorded this song the harmonies and keyboards were definitely influenced by Stevie's sound."

'Que Sera Sera' (live)

CBR: "'Que Sera Sera' is a song we have been closing our gigs with all over the world. I love Sly and the Family Stone's version, how he takes what feels like a nursery rhyme in Doris Day's lovely hands and turns it into a philosophical outcry, declaiming “The future's not ours to see”. Sometimes I attack this lyric angrily, sometimes I'm all peaceful and surrendered to it. What an amazing song. We recorded this super-long version in Washington D.C one night when the magic in the air meant we didn't want to get off stage. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed playing it."

Corinne has announced details of a brand new EP of cover versions that will be released on Valentine's Day, 14th February (in the US, the EP will be released physically and digitally on 25 January). Called 'The Love EP' it comprises of some of Corinneâ€™s favourite songs, recorded around the world as she toured in support of her recent album â€˜The Seaâ€™. Tracks include Princeâ€™s â€˜I Wanna Be Your Loverâ€™, Bellyâ€™s â€˜Low Red Moonâ€™, a soulful reading of the Bob Marley classic â€˜Is This Love?â€™, Paul McCartneyâ€™s â€˜My Loveâ€™ and a Sly & The Family Stone-inspired live version of Doris Dayâ€™s â€˜Que Sera Seraâ€™.

A message from Corinne...

It's been a whirlwind 2010 for Corinne, culminating in last month's UK tour. Exclusive to CBR.net, here's what she thought of returning to the UK to play a host of regional shows:

"I had an amazing time on the UK tour. It was rainy and blustery but with loads of great crowds; really listening, receptive, appreciative audiences, stomping encores and some dancing...

Edinburgh was in the beautiful Queen's Hall, with echoic acoustics and lots of friends and family. Manchester was a brilliant audience and a party afterwards at Big Hands with loads of friends. I loved the Leeds gig. I'd been to that venue a week before to see Mark Ronson and the Business International, so it was great to be back there doing my own gig. The crowd were really warm. Afterwards we went out to the Sela Bar which has just opened an amazing new restaurant overseen by my old friend, Verde, whose food has to be tasted to be believed.

In Newcastle, the audience were great and really appreciative. We got some big cheers. Bexhill was on a lovely bright, cold day. The venue was gorgeous. All the audiences have been really diverse, none more so than Bexhill. I love to see all different people come together to listen to music, and again, I'm so happy that the people who have got into this album have discovered it for themselves and not been 'targeted' as a 'demographic'. It feels like the old-fashioned thing to do, touring so extensively and letting people hear these songs, in some cases, for the first time live.

Bristol is always cool, it's such a music city and I love that venue. After I tried to catch a bit of my friend's dub night at The Golden Lion...only made the lock in. Cambridge was a nice intimate gig. Little room, packed full of warm people. In London at the Royal Festival Hall, we debuted our version of Bob Marley's 'Is This Love?' in that beautiful space. It's an amazing open sound. Leicester was the last night and a great listening audience.

It seems to have all gone so quickly. Overall I just felt really greatful to my audience for still being there after all this time and for being open minded enough to roll with all these changes. I love playing this set because it has such contrasts, in mood, tempo and intensity. I love when the audience is with you and I was amazed and relieved to feel that on all these gigs.

We just had to post this. Last month at Corinne's show in Buenos Aires the crowd broke into an impromptu bout of soccer-style passion as Corinne came to the end of performing 'Like A Star'. Corinne's band joined-in and after a few moments a full jam-sesssion was in full flow. You can check the amazing video out at the following link (apologies for the grainy quality).

Last night in Newcastle, Corinne was supported on the first of six nights by new artist Pete Lawrie. Before he took to the stage CBR.net spent five minutes in his company, interviewing him about his music and plans for the tour. Here's what he had to say:

CBR.net: Hey Pete, you're supporting Corinne on a handful of dates on her UK tour. For all those uninitiated Corinne Bailey Rae fans, can you tell them a little about Pete Lawrie and the type of music you play?

PL: Firstly, I would like to say hello everyone. We are big Corinne fans too and it's an honour to be playing with her on this tour. For these shows, it is just my drummer and I, so our sound is a bit more bluesy and acoustic, with some southern influence. On our forthcoming record and when we at full strength with our live band, there are bells, whistles, strings, samples and a few kitchens sinks thrown in for good measure.

CBR.net: What have you been up to for the past couple of months?

PL: We have been all over the shop. We shot our first music video for a song called 'All That We Keep'. We busked in Barcelona. Played all summer long at Glastonbury, Isle of Wight, Radio Ones Big Weekend and Wakestock festivals. Recorded the album in various bedrooms and 'proper' studios and now the Corinne tour. Writing all that down makes me realise what a dizzy and amazing year it's been so far...

CBR.net: What are you most looking forward to when touring with Corinne?

PL: Watching her shows and meeting her fans. I have a feeling it will be proper music lovers and enthusiasts at these shows. Also just taking in the size of the venues and the atmosphere will be amazing.

CBR.net: Do you have a particular Corinne Bailey Rae song that you're looking forward to seeing her perform live?

PL: What I love about the new record is that it is an album in the traditional sense. A full body of work. These days, that is a rare thing. An album that is a work of art, rather than a marketable quick music fix and so that is what I am looking forward to hearing; the record as a whole.

CBR.net: What are your plans for 2011?

PL: To fulfil some boyhood dreams, like playing Jools Holland or touring in a big bus with beds. The kind of things you imagine being in band is all about when you are young.

CBR.net: If you were to tell Corinne's fans to check out one of your songs which would you pick and why?

PL: If I was being a good boy I would say the next single. But our first single 'All That We Keep' Is a very personal song for me and one that I am very proud of, so perhaps that.

Corinne heads-out on her UK tour this week and is supported by two young singer-songwriters in the form of Josh Osho and Pete Lawrie. We thought we'd take this opportunity to grab a quick word with Josh & Pete so you can get a feel for them and their music before hopefully catching them at one of Corinne's shows.

First up is Josh who supports Corinne on her first three shows (which begins in Edinburgh tonight and then takes in Manchester and Leeds over the weekend).

CBR.net: Hey Josh, you're supporting Corinne Bailey Rae on a few dates on her UK tour. For all those uninitiated Corinne Bailey Rae fans, can you tell them a little about Josh Osho and the type of music you play?

JO: Hello... Its great to have the opportunity to be involved with Corinne and be reaching out to you all. A little bit about me... I've spent all of my 19 years growing up in South London, the stomping ground that has given birth to this blessing of a journey I'm on. It's taken me to a lot of beautiful moments of which supporting Corinne is one of and a hell of a lot more 'Breaking Point's' ;) but I'm still alive and kicking. Each and every one of my songs encapsulates a thought, feeling or moment I though or felt needed to become a memory. I hope you all enjoy what you hear and look forward to sharing these memories with you.

CBR.net: What have you been up to for the past couple of months?

JO: I've just been writing, recording and finishing off what I eagerly anticipate to be the release of my debut album.

CBR.net: What are you most looking forward to when touring with Corinne?

JO: Some of my first performances with a genuine critical and public response. I can't wait to get on stage and be a part of what on a minor scale I've experienced as a euphoric and honest atmosphere that only audiences that take their time out can provide myself and those other lucky few with. Supporting Corinne will be my first big moment on stage and is set to be a moment that will prove a cherished memory, not only because of this opportunity but the opportunity to learn from and buddy up with who you already note as an inspirational global talent and example for fresh artists who wish not just obtain commercial success but also to preserve honesty and integrity in their representation and music. Thank you Corinne and thank YOU for this moment.

CBR.net: Do you have a particular Corinne Bailey Rae song that you're looking forward to seeing her perform live?

JO: Mmm that's a tricky one. I think I'd have to say 'Put Your Records On' because for me it was the moment she came out and showed us, yep I've arrived and I'm gonna shake things up. For me, it was a long awaited change of scenery on our air waves.....I'm spoilt for choice so I'd also have to include 'The Sea'....it was an interesting take considering her debut album and in a different way shed another fascinating and admirable light on Corinne's art and persona.

CBR.net: What are your plans for 2011?

JO: 2011 is gonna be a massive year for me. My debut singles and album will be released and you will be seeing and hearing a whole lot more from me......I hope!! I expect it will be as always another rich period of growth and learning as the next junction of this journey appears. I'll be making sure I keep a note of everything and above all give 110% and just enjoy the ride.

CBR.net: If you were to tell Corinne's fans to check out one of your songs which would you pick and why?

JO: Just to let you know I'm not reeeeeally gonna pick but for questions sake....let's just say 'Ebenezer Hotel', its somewhat a landmark track for this album and my life so far. It highlights a point in my life where things were as pear-shaped as they could get. I was thinking, feeling and getting sucked in to a whole lot of madness but was able to clamber out the other side with my life, and the beginnings though unbeknown at the time, of my debut album and a few emotional and physical scars, scratch that, more than a few physical scars.

Here's some more behind-the-scenes photos from Corinne's recent performance at The White House on 2nd June as part of Paul McCartney's presentation with The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

The first shot on Corrine's Facebook page (which you can see above) is of Paul McCartney's stunning acoustic performance of 'Blackbird' before he picked-up the prestigious prize. The second is the view from the drawing room onto one of the most famous lawns in the world. The final shot is of the emblem of the Gershwin prize showing the brothers, George and Ira after whom the award is dedicated. That's what all the fuss was about!

Corinne performs for ace new web portal Live Buzz

Corinne recently performed a session for brand new web portal Live Buzz. It's been set-up by Nic Harcourt - formerly of KCRW and an early champion of Corinne's music (he was playing 'Like A Star' back in 2005 long before it was officially release!). The session was filmed and should be live for you all to see later this month. You can view some photos Visit W3Schools!.

The final picture in the series is Corinne with Nic (on left) and Jeff Greenberg, the CEO of the legendary Village Studios in LA where the session was recorded. Fact fans may be be interested to know that Corinne previously recorded at the same studio way back in 2006, when she collaborated with Marcus Miller on the track 'Free'!

Yesterday evening we managed to grab a quick word with Corinne to hear her thoughts on the Mercury Music Prize shortlist nomination for her album 'The Sea'. Here's what she had to say!

"I'm really pleased to be nominated with this record. 'The Sea' is an album I wrote alone and co-produced, it was all on my shoulders. It has been great for me to be touring the world with this album, seeing a positive reaction to it and getting recognition from the Mercury Prize team means a lot to me."

The overall winner of the Mercury Music Prize will be announced on Tuesday 7th September.

Corinne's second album 'The Sea' has been nominated for the 2010 Mercury Music Prize! Corinne's album was unveiled as part of the shortlist at The Hospital Club in London by presenter Lauren Laverne this morning. She will compete with the likes of Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling, Dizzee Rascal, The XX and Paul Weller for the prestigious prize. The overall winner will be announced on Tuesday 7th September.

Corinne played a fantastic show at Somerset House in London on Friday night. Reviews of the performance online and in the papers have been absolutely glowing. You can read what the Evening Standard and The Arts Desk thought of her show now.

Corinne has also been tipped by many influential journalists and broadsheets to make the Mercury Music Prize shortlist this year for her stunning album 'The Sea'. Both The Independent and The Observer have this week tipped 'The Sea' to make the cut. Corinne has today announced details of an extensive tour this autumn playing dates across the UK.

This will be Corinne's first full headline tour in three years and will hopefully give many of you the first chance to see songs from her new album 'The Sea' being performed live with her fantastic band.

Tickets for the tour go on general sale on Friday 16th July but there's a special pre-sale for readers of CBR.net and also for 02 customers for the Academy shows which starts at 9am on Wednesday 14th July. Tickets are priced at Â£19.50 for all shows, except London which is priced at Â£25.

Firstly Corinne will perform her new single 'Closer' and be interviewed on the 5 O'clock Show on Channel 4 on the 16th July, whilst BBC3 will also be covering Corrine's set from Scotland's T In The Park Festival on the 11th July.

Those of you who experienced Worthy Farm's scorching sunshine at the weekend will know that Corinne's show at Glastonbury Festival on Friday afternoon was an absolute triumph. BBC4 broadcast a special programme presented by Mark Radcliffe on Friday night devoted completely to Corinne's set and you can watch it on the BBC iPlayer right now.

Hurry though, it will be taken down this coming Friday, 2nd July.

Corinne talks 'Closer video and exclusive stills

Corinne has today unveiled some exclusive stills from the video shoot for new single 'Closer' as well as giving an exclusive insight into the thinking behind the video. Here's what she told CBR.net this morning...

"I had such an amazing time making this video. The director, Adria Petty, has brilliant ideas. We both thought about the feel of the song and independently imagined a slightly seventies look, Donna Summer sexy, abandoned roller disco fun.

I love the scene with the veil inspired by a 1970s Vogue cover by Bianca Jagger.

The choreographer Frank Gatson was on hand to offer me advice about movement in the video. He helped my focus of the strength shape I was making."

The video for 'Closer' premieres later this week. We'll keep you posted when it's available to watch online.

Somerset House gig sold-out

It gives us great pleasure to reveal that Corinne's show at Somerset House on 16th July has now sold-out. For those that have managed to get tickets it should be one of the stand-out gigs of Corinne's live calendar this summer, taking place in the beautiful environs of the landmark neo-classical building in the heart of London.

If you're still desperate to see Corinne perform then you can catch her at a number of UK and European Festivals over the coming months. Late last week, Corinne performed at the White House as part of the tribute concert marking Paul McCartney's presention with the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. Corinne to perform at White House as part of Paul McCartney tribute concert

Sir Paul McCartney is today being presented with the prestigious Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song at the White House, Washington D.C.

To mark the occasion a special concert is being laid-on that will feature a tribute by major stars, many of whom will perform the songs that propelled McCartney to legendary status in music and humanitarianism around the world. The line-up of performers includes Stevie Wonder, Faith Hill, Jonas Brothers, Dave Grohl, Jack White, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Herbie Hancock and our very own Corinne Bailey Rae.

Corinne's US fans will be able to watch the concert on PBS stations nationwide on Wednesday, 28th July at 8pm EDT.

Tomorrow night Corinnebaileyrae.net is packing up a bag, hoping on a train and heading over to Leamington Spa for Corinne's final date on her short UK tour to Live Blog and Twitter backstage at the show. Hopefully we'll be able to give you a bit of an insight into what goes on behind-the-scenes of Corinne's live show, whilst we should also be spending some time in the company of Corinne herself to ask her questions/ film some footage exclusively for the website.

But that's not all....oh no. We want to set aside some time for YOU to ask the questions to Corinne as well. "I was feeling inspired..." Corinne talks Leeds gig exclusively to Corinnebaileyrae.net

Corinne returned to Leeds in spectacular style on Saturday night with a stunning homecoming performance at the Met University. We were lucky enough to speak to Corinne yesterday following the show and here's what she had to say...

"I absolutely loved the Leeds gig. It was such a diverse crowd and I felt we were connecting really well. The band played brilliantly and I felt relaxed and just took my time. Our friend Coop's was DJing and I thought he had really charged the atmosphere, plus Fyfe Dangerfield was brilliant before hand.

I had been to see Patti Smith at the Sage a few nights before, which was amazing ( I'll write about it in my scrapbook soon) so I was feeling inspired. I thought the gig was raw but they were into it so we had a lot of freedom.

Looking forward to Glasgow tonight. I went to the venue last night and it's beautiful."

Last night Corinne performed a live session on Radcliffe and Maconie's show over on BBC Radio 2. She played 'Paper Dolls', 'Are You Here' and a stunning version of her new single 'Paris Nights/ New York Mornings'.

You can listen to the entire session and interview with Corinne now over on the Listen Again feature on the BBC Radio 2 website. Simply skip to about thirty minutes on the player (it's after that lovely Fleet Foxes track) for the start of the interview and 'Paper Dolls' and then 1 hour 10 minutes for 'Are You Here' and then 1 hour 34 minutes for 'Paris Nights/ New York Mornings' which closes the show.

Inside The Guardian session

Wow! For those of you at the show last night, i have only one question.... how fantastic was Corinne!

After an amazing show like that we just had to grab a quick word with Corinne on how she felt following such a fantastic performance. She wanted us to pass on this message to all those that came down...

"I had an amazing time at the gig last night. The crowd were great, I felt totally lost in it. I love working with my band they are so responsive and they inspire me. I hope you enjoyed it , those of you that were down. It was such a thrill to see people into the new album. I never read reviews so this is the first feedback I have had. Loved it! X c"

'The Sea' charts at Number 5 in UK

Wow, what a week that was! 'The Sea' followed it's first week success in the US (where it debuted at Number 7 on the Billboard charts) with a Top 5 charting in the UK, and the highest new entry at that.

Â As many of you saw, Corinne appeared on the GMTV sofas last week, where she gave a great interview and recorded a beautiful version of 'I'd Do It All Again'. She was also interviewed for Radio 4's Front Row show, which you can listen to again at the BBC iPlayer. The Sun Online filmed Corinne answering the questions you submitted last week to their music team, whilst Orange, Soul Culture and The Arts Desk have all recently posted brand new interview content, each taking a unique look at the recording of 'The Sea'.

One of the charities that Corinne is a huge supporter of is Pump Aid and they recently announced details of a Live Earth 6km Run For Water, that is taking place in London and across the UK on April 18th. 6km is the average distance that women in Africa walk each day to collect water. Anyone who raises Â£500 or more from sponsorship can request aÂ photo of the water pump that they pay for.Â You can sign-up for the Run For Water event over at the Pump Aid website now.

They are hoping to raise over a million pounds on the day, and it would be fantastic if you'd lend your support to such a worthy cause. All runners who sign up for the London event will also have free entrance to an afternoon's concert.

New single news and Glastonbury festival

With 'The Sea' currently standing as the highest new entry in the UK charts and having debuted at #7 in the US Billboard top 100, Corinne has announced details of the album's second single. 'Paris Nights/New York Mornings' will be released on the 29th March.

Corinne has also revealed this week that she will be performing at this year's Glastonbury festival, whilst on Monday sheÂ performs as the finale at the One Young World summit's Opening Ceremony, taking place at Old Billingsgate with the likes of Desmond Tutu, Kofi Annan and Sir Bob Geldof in attendance.

Remember also that Corinne plays her first major UK show of the year on the 24th February at the Shepherd's Bush Empire. A few tickets are still available, hurry though they are selling fast! You can buy them from here now.

Finally, Corinnebaileyrae.net spent time in London with Corinne yesterday recording a filmed interview exclusively for the official website. 'The Sea' - Released today!

The big day has arrived. Today - Monday, 1st February - Corinne Bailey Rae releases her hugely-anticipated new album 'The Sea'.

You can now purchase your physical copy of the album through the following online etailers: Amazon/ Play whilst 'The Sea' will also be available to buy at your local HMV, Tesco, Asda and Morrison stores from this morning. You will also be able to download the album over atiTunes .

Many of you will have seen the fantastic press reviews and support the album and Corinne have been getting over the past few months. Below we've popped just a pick of the coverage to give you just a brief idea of how well the album has already been received. It's been a truly fantastic response.

News, reviews and Coachella

As many of you will have seen, Corinne's return and the release of her brand new album 'The Sea' has been getting some fantastic press reaction from both sides of the Atlantic.

Earlier this year Corinne was the stunning cover star of Billboard magazine, whilst she's also recently given interviews to The New York Times, The Hook and Q The Podcast from CBC Radio. In the UK you can currently read extensive features on Corinne's return in this month's Mojo, Q Magazine and The Big Issue. There was also a fantastic cover feature in last weekend's Telegraph Magazine which you can now read online.

Early reviews of 'the Sea' have also been fantastic, with the likes of BBC Music already predicting it to be one of the musical highlights of 2010. If you haven't yet managed to hear the album in full you can still stream it over at the listening parties on NPR (US) and The Times (UK), but hurry they won't be up for much longer!

Corinne has also confirmed that she'll be playing this year's Coachella festival. She'll be performing on the Saturday the 17th April alongside the likes MGMT, Hot Chip and Muse. For more details visit here

Following all your New Year celebrations it may well seem that all the excitement is over for another year but here at CHQ there's still so much going on as we draw closer to the international release of 'The Sea' next month.

Over the festive break Corinne's return was picked by The Times, The Telegraph and the BBC as one of the most highly-anticipated music events of 2010 which is fantastic news.

The Independent Online has also just launched an extensive new interview with Jamie Thraves, the coveted director behind the fantastic video for Corinne's new single 'I'd Do It All Again'. In the feature Jamie talks at length about working with Corinne, how they developed ideas for the shoot and his thoughts on what makes such an iconic music video. Exclusive Jamie Thraves Interview

Earlier this week CHQ spent some time in the company of acclaimed film director Jamie Thraves, the man responsible for creating the video for 'I'd Do It All Again', which you can now watch in full over in the video channel.

Having previously directed such acclaimed videos as Radiohead's 'Just', Coldplay's 'The Scientist' and KT Tunstall's 'Under The Weather', Thraves is regarded as one of the UK's most iconic music video directors. We talked to him about his inspiration for the video, how he worked with Corinne to develop the idea and he gave us a rare insight into the goings-on on a music video shoot. Here's what he had to say exclusively for corinnebaileyrae.net:

CHQ: Hello Jamie, thanks for talking to corinnebaileyrae.net. What were your initial reactions when you heard 'I'd Do It All Again' for the first time?

JT: I was very impressed, I thought it was the best song that I'd heard by Corinne. I found it a very moving song, it reminded me of the music of Billy Holiday with the production of Marvin Gaye 'What's Going On' period yet still very modern somehow.

CHQ: What was your inspiration behind creating a video for the track?

JT: When I first heard the song I instantly saw her doing everyday things, shopping in a supermarket, walking through a park etc but always singing in an intimate fashion. The central idea of Corinne stuck in a loop in a 'Groundhog Day' world simply came from the lyrics 'I'd Do It All Again'.

CHQ: How closely did you work with Corinne to come up with a creative direction for the video?

JT: Pretty close actually which was great. We met just as I was formulating the idea. She told me she was fan of my work, said she thought it was very real looking, cinematic and quite dark and that's what she wanted for her video, nothing too sunny she said. I looked at her other videos and realised just how sunny they were and why she wanted to do something different for this song but on the day we filmed it was such a lovely sunny day - I told Corinne the sun just seems to follow her around, but it's okay because in sad moments the sun can underline sadness just as easily as rain. She's a strong lady, she knows what she likes/doesn't like and we agreed that the song had a sad beginning, a hopeful middle and a sad ending, so that's what we aimed for with the visuals. She saw herself running at some point, so that inspired the running down the alleyway and gave me the idea of her walking in front of traffic, we both saw that moment as a great release in the video. I encouraged her to dress/rearrange the bedroom so it felt like her own room which we she really went to town on, the size of the room didn't really make it into the video but it had Corinne's personal touch, pretty much like the whole video. She knew what energy she wanted here and there, we both agreed how slow she should walk in the video etc...we really bounced off each other to be honest.

CHQ: How did you prepare for the shoot with Corinne?

JT: We had quite a few discussions as I've already mentioned. I had to plan the video very concisely as there were essentially three story days in the video and Corinne needed to be in exactly the same place in every situation but singing three different parts of the song. It felt to me like we were timing a musical scene from an old movie like 'Singing In The Rain', so I made this animatic, I filmed my storyboard and edited it to the song to work out the rhythm of the video. It was very helpful.

CHQ: Where did you shoot it and was the location important to the feel of the video?

JT: For some of the video we shot around where I live, Peckham Rye/East Duwlich. I'd just shot my most recent feature film around that area because I feel very comfortable working close to home. I did suggest to Corinne we shoot the video in Leeds, so it felt personal to her, but she was happy and quite adamant for me to shoot this where I wanted which I really appreciated. Corinne was very particualr about what house we selected for her, something old with character but not too posh, it's apparently close to what her own house is like. The rest of the video was shot down Waterloo way, the subyway is connected to the Imax cinema, it's a very beautiful subway with constant changing lights. Robbie Ryan, the director of photography on the video, did an amazing job, he's great to work with, funny, hard working and very talented he'd just shot the very excellent movie 'Fish Tank'.

CHQ: All the music videos you've shot have been extremely iconic. Is that a conscious aim before you begin filming or is it just something that naturally happens through the process of shooting it?

JT: No, not at all, I just try to make everything I do as interesting, exciting and entertaining as possible, if the end result gets tagged 'iconic' then that's a bonus. I would say that the music has to be iconic first though before a video can achieve iconic status, 'Just' by Radiohead is a classic defining song by that band, if I had put that idea in for some obscure band that no one had ever heard of the video would be just as obscure. I have to say though that in some fifteen years of making videos this video with Corinne was one of the most enjoyable experiences I have ever had, we had a great crew, great spirit and a great artist.

CHQ: Have you heard Corinne's new album 'The Sea' in full yet? What did you think?

JT: I haven't but I've heard great things about it, if 'I'd Do It All Again' is anything to go by, I think it's going to be a classic album. I asked her for a copy and one for my mum, I'm hoping she'll sign them.

'The Sea'

Some of you may have seen a sneak preview of the artwork for Corinne's brand new album 'The Sea' in last Friday's email. For all those that haven't we've now added it to corinnebaileyrae.net and you can see it on the homepage now.

This artwork has been shot by Tierney Gearon and is also going to be the basis for our new-look corinnebaileyrae.net, which re-launches early next week. The new websites features a brand new forum, online store and a unique new channel called Corinne's scrapbook.

This scrapbook will be regularly updated over the course of 2010 by Corinne herself and has been created to give you an insight into Corinne's thoughts and passions as she releases 'The Sea' and begins to tour the world.

Also on the re-launched site there'll be exclusive photo galleries, audio/ video players and a comprehensive news channel so you can follow all new updates from Corinne Bailey Rae HQ no matter where you're based.

Exclusive Corinne interview & Tabernacle live photos

Tucked away in leafy West London, through quiet back streets and across tidy little squares, sits The Tabernacle. This beautifully-renovated church filled to capacity last night as it played host to Corinne's first full-band performance for over two years. CHQ spent the afternoon at The Tabernacle, where we managed to get a handful of exclusive photos from the show and caught a quick word with Corinne following her - quite frankly jaw-dropping - performance. Here's what she had to say...

CHQ: So Corinne, how much did you enjoy the show?

It was really great. I was actually really quite worried beforehand! I was wondering what it was going to be like, I hadn't played down here in so long and I was worried about how the audience would be. But thankfully there were loads of people who were fans of the music and had seen me a lot of times. It was fantastic.

CHQ: Why did you choose the Tabernacle?

I thought it was a really beautiful venue and I really liked the idea of playing in an old church. We'd just played the Jo Whiley Little Noise session at the Union Chapel and I just really like the feel of playing in them. We actually recorded some of the new album in a church - the choir for Ã‹Å“Diving for HeartsÃ‹Å“ in St Margaret's church in Leeds - and I just love the feel. They've always got really amazing acoustics and I wanted somewhere quite small so I didn't feel loads of pressure.

CHQ: It really was such a beautiful location and you and the band seemed to enjoy it so much.

They're quite new to this kind of project but they're old friends of mine and I've played music with them a lot so I feel really comfortable with them.

CHQ: You really can sense that on the stage.

I'm really glad about that! I know them all really well. The ones that are older than me I've really admired from a distance for a long time, and really liked their music. They used to play at this bar I used to work at called The Underground and used to get me up for a few songs and stuff when they were performing, so it's really nice to have them as part of my band now.

CHQ: So you've kind of gone full-circle?

Yes, definitely. And even more so because the guitarist I mentioned on stage who I wrote Ã‹Å“Diving For Hearts" with, Jenny, was in my first band Helen. So it's kind of like half my first band and then the rest are people that I started to get into once I left Helen and started getting more into jazz and soul.

CHQ: And what was it like playing the new material tonight? Were you at all nervous?

I was sort of nervous and excited at the same time, but I was really looking forward to playing tonight. I had two other songs that I wanted to put in the set but we had to have a shortish set tonight. I just can't wait until I can do all the songs!

CHQ: Was there a particular favourite song that you enjoyed performing tonight?

I really enjoyed playing Ã‹Å“I'd Do It All AgainÃ‹Å“, which is going to be the first song that we put out before the album. I felt like something really happened then as everyone concentrated their energy towards the song. It felt pretty special.

CHQ: One of the many highlights for CHQ was Ã‹Å“The Sea", which is another new song. Before you played it you mentioned the fact that you use an autoharp in the song - which sounds just so lovely when you play it. How did you discover the instrument?

Well I went to a folk shop to try and find a violin - this was about two years ago or even more - I used to play quite a lot and I wanted to get back into it. But when I picked up an instrument I realised that all the intonation had changed as my hands were different sizes, I've got these blisters on my fingers from playing guitar so much, and it really affected how I played. Then I saw this autoharp tucked in the corner and I picked it up and strummed a few chords and just thought it was incredible. I don't know loads about the technical side of music and I was just with my husband and said ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…â€œlook, it's got all the chords!, which of course it hasn't, it's in a certain key so it only has a few chords, but it's got enough to write a song! I initially wrote Ã‹Å“The Sea" on that and I really wanted to keep (the autoharp) in as I think it really suits the song as it's really fragile and unusual.

eBay charity auction winners announced

As is customary with any good eBay auction, a real flurry of late bidding pushed the price for the final two pairs of tickets for Corinne's long sold-out show at the Tabernacle on Monday night up and up and up!

Now that the dust has settled on the auctions it gives CBR.net great pleasure to announce the winners as Trevor McVeigh from Romford and Yorgo Lykouria from North London. The money generated from these auctions alone will help our partner charity Pump Aid pay for nine Elephant Toilets which will provide adequate sanitation for 150 people for 10 years.

Trevor's winning bid will allow him to surprise his partner - and huge Corinne fan - Liz Jukes with a trip to the show on Monday night, whilst Yorgo emailed in to say that "seeing Corinne at the Tabernacle will be a one-of-a-kind experience. She is headed for much larger venues, so I couldnâ€™t miss it. The benefit for Pump Aid makes these tickets very special. I know that water is precious. I hope this little contribution helps."

Corinne and everyone involved with Pump Aid would like to thank Trevor, Yorgo and all those who took the time to take part in the auction for these tickets. We all couldn't have hoped for a better response.

Corinne sparkles on Later / Tabernacle stage times

Last night on BBC2's live version of Later with Jools Holland, Corinne debuted material from her forthcoming album 'The Sea' with a jaw-dropping acoustic version of new single 'I'd Do It All Again'. Those of you from the UK who didn't manage to catch it live can watch it over on the BBC's iPlayer service by following this link now. Corinne's performance will also be featured in the full show which airs on BBC2 this Friday night.

Door opening and stage times have also now been confirmed for those lucky enough to be attending Corinne's first full show in over two years at the Tabernacle on Monday night. Doors to the venue will now open at 7pm and Corinne will be on-stage at 7.45pm.

If you didn't manage to get your hands on a ticket for this show fear not for CBR.net will be running a series of exclusive backstage photos from the event on the Tuesday morning.

Later with Jools Holland performance / Little Noise Sessions and much more...

Corinne is giving you all a chance to have a sneak preview of her brand new single 'I'd Do It All Again' when she appears on BBC2's Later with Jools Holland this week. Corinne will be performing an exclusive acoustic version of the track - just her, her guitar and her bandmate Steve Brown on piano - live on the show. It'll be your first chance to hear 'I'd Do It All Again', the first single to be taken from Corinne's new album 'The Sea' which will be released in February next year. The show will be broadcast on both Tuesday 17th November and Friday 20th November. UK viewers will also be able to watch the performance via the BBC iPlayer for a week following each broadcast.

Corinne has also just confirmed she will make a special guest appearance as part of Mencap's Little Noise Sessions this coming Thursday 19th November at the Union Chapel in Islington, London where she will be performing an acoustic set. Tickets are priced at £40 and are available from Here.

Tickets for Corinne's Tabernacle show on November 23rd sold-out in a matter of hours earlier this month. If you didn't manage to get your hands on a ticket fear not, there's still one remaining chance for you to be part of this unique and intimate show. You'll also be raising money for an extremely worthwhile cause, Pump Aid.

Corinne has just launched an exclusive charity auction on eBay for the very last pair of tickets. The individual with the most generous bid will win the chance to attend the Tabernacle show and be one of the first people to experience songs from Corinne's brand new album 'The Sea'.
